For the 89 renix does the ecu change for the 89 model year or actually in 89? Reason I ask I'm just curious. If so how can I check? Also when I bought my comanche it had an extra ECM laying behind the seat. How can I determine what year it is out of and if its for a manual or auto?

Model year, usually beginning production in June or July of the previous year.

Google the ECU part number to find it's application. Auto trans ECUs work on either one. IIRC, they have something in them to take care of the idle when the shifter is dropped into gear.
