What i can remember is -
'88-engine is renix,'92-high output
'88-transmission has a power/comfort switch,'92-didn't have the switch but was essentially permanently in "power" mode.
'88-front axle had a vacuum disconnect,'92-didn't
'88-rear axle options were Dana 35 (non c-clip) & Dana 44,'92-Dana 35 (c-clip) & Chrysler 8.25".

Hope those helps.

That's gonna depend on who you talk to, i personally think the '92 is better. My brother has a '90-renix and he has had problems with leaking injectors, tps sensors, and overheating. He has had his for 10 years and I've had my '92 for 7 years. I haven't had any problems with the motor at all.

The '92 has the better open cooling system, more power, better fuel injection, and a good bit more aftermerket support for bolt-on power. The vacuum disconnect on the front axle of older xj's ('91-older) were problematic with leaking and not engaging the front axle. The rear axle is a little more complicated, the Dana 35 non c-clip is a little better than the c-clip version. The 8.25" is bigger/stronger than the 35 whereas the 44 is top dog and sought after. What rear axle you had on the '88 and now on the '92 would dictate which is better.

yeah ive got a 91 laredo and love it, the 4.0 high output is a great engine and from the factory new they had a proclaimed 200 horsepower, ive got 220000 or so on mine and i just put the oil pump in it!
