If you put the bolts through the housing and then the gasket there is no need to stick the gasket in place with rtv.

Figures, I wonder if that did more harm than good. Gonna pick up a new gasket tomorrow and give it plenty of time to set up with the rtv before Monday

Unless there is something wrong with either one or both surfaces and they are clean you should only need the gasket. If you want to use a gasket sealer get some of this:
