Don't confuse the two issues. In 2000 they had to make room for the California Emissions manifold, as well Chrysler simplified their parts chain by using the same axle on the TJ and XJ.

X2 they knew the cherokee was a bout done so they just pulled low pinion axle from the tj bin instead of continuing to spend money making 2 different axles

In the REnix and early HOs it was disguised as for driveshaft clearance when indeed it was put there to make the exhaust gasses stay hotter so the cat would start working sooner. aMC got a waiver in their emissions testing by doing that.

As for the later models, I'm not sure. The factory did start reducing the exhaust port size in the head to do somewhat the same thing. Regulations did change throughout the years.

So what's the bottom line on this, will I notice a seat of the pants improvement if I get a new pipe, I've done other things to improve breathing, I might as well do this.

Do it! I did the walker pipe and it performs great

If your gonna do then I sugest getting a mandrell bent pipe. Although the walker pipe is great it still got some rough bends

Is the factory downpipe stainless or mild? I have thought about cutting the factory DP about 2" from the flange and just redoing my exhaust from there, but if it's stainless, I can't weld stainless and stainless is harder to bend (to make the tube round again)

I just replaced my exhaust from manifold all the way back.

Walker downpipe
Walker cat
Dynomax super turbo muffler and tail pipe.

I can definitely feel a difference some where near the seat in my pants.
More responsive, feels smoother.
