Delayed Start 91 XJ
Well I ran a thread/post search and came up empty. So we gotta start another new one. My 91XJ has started to have an intermittant starting problem. Sometimes she starts right up with the turn of the key. Other times you have to hold the key in the start position for up to five seconds before she turns over. When she does turn over she starts right up. The Neutral safety switch was replaced about 2k ago, as well as the starter. Any ideas would be helpfull.

Dude, I know your problem. I had the same thing happen with my 91 XJ about 8 months ago. The one way check valve inside your fuel pump is bad. Unfortunately you're right the Jeep runs fine other than the long starting period but, the check valve is inside the fuel pump so you will have to replace your fuel pump to fix this. This check valve holds the fuel inside the line and fuel injection rail after turning the engine/fuel pump off. When it goes bad the fuel drains all the way back to the tank everytime you shut the motor off. If started right back up it sometimes starts normal but, when left for a period of time or overnight, you get the long cranking period before starting.

Does first click on the ignition activate the fuel pump for these? (Im use to tech talk about my toyota mr2...lol)
Def. Fuel issue. You could have a bad fuel pressure regulator? Rent/borrow a fuel pressure tester from a local shop.

Thank you for the info. I want to be clear about one thing. She won't even crank for up to 5 sec. I just hold the key in the start position. I don't hear the fuel pump running, other than when the key is first put into the on position.

Change the fuel pump and this problem will go away. I can't say it any clearer than that.

I dont understand how the fuel pump would cause a delay in it cranking over. starting yes cranking no. You turn the key to start, it engages the starter, how does the fuel pump effect the starter? Or am I misunderstanding the post?

OK, I got fouled up the translation of what you call turning over. Okay so your problem is a 5 second delay between turning the key to start and when your rig actually starts to "crank". Well, if the starter, battery, battery cables and all connections are known to be good then I would go with either the ignition switch at the base of the steering column or the starter relay.

You guys are awesome. When the parts store opens up I am going to go pick up a new ignition switch. If that don't work I'll try the starter relay. I'll let you know what happens.
