Death wobble getting the best of me (and my pockets)
One day my xj is bullet proof, the next day I'm scared to drive it around the block. I have replaced: sway bar brushing, track bar, gear box, pitman arm and have had multiple alignment in between. My truck feels as if it is nervous all the time now, I can't keep it drom shaking. I don't know what to do next. I've been directed towards death wobble threads which have lead me to all this work, but i have not yet been able to diagnose the problem. I love my jeep but I'm so bummed out over it, I dont know what to do. I am even considering selling it. Please, can someone help me? Nobody knows what I'm talking about when I consult mechanics. They just want to swap out parts. How do I diagnose what he problem is? Ball joints maybe? So frustrated I am...

can be trac bar, loose trac bar, worn out ball joints, not enought caster, loose steering linkage, worn out tres on the linkage ends, control arm bushings.... anything that moves or wiggles that comes loose will cause death wobble

just jack up the front end, put the body on jack stands and let the axle hang free, then turn the steering wheel back and forth while shaking the suspension at full lock and strait forward. should find something loose and solve the problem

I jacked it up once again and took a really thorough look. At first glance everything looked fine, then I noticed that my upper control arms were almost non existent. Thanks sandaddik2 for the suggestions. I really appreciate it.

could it be driveshaft vibration and not steering/suspension wobble...? you have a 4.5" lift thats pretty high for a transfer case drop (assuming you have one).... maybe you should invest in a SYE. Sometimes its better to try different, not harder. just my 2 cents.

Wobble
Hi Joxer .... just registered on this forum so first I`d like to say "Hi" to everyone, and happy to have found what seems to be a very friendly and co-operative site, and then I`ll tell you what`s wrong with your jeep. The steering strut in the very front of your jeep is worn out. Get rid of it and you`ll be rid of your problem. It`s not a very expensive item to buy, and very easy to install, but it can sure cause a lot of "shake-rattle-and-roll" when it goes. Sorry you had to go through so much expense, but just replace the strut and you`ll be fine. Good Luck !!!

i got the death wobble before i lifted my jeep..... the trac bar and ball joints were bad, so i replaced both and upgraded the track bar to an adjustable.... worked for a little while, then i lifted it 5 inches and got an alignment and it was fine for a while, so i took it on a 800 mile journey and on my way home as i was coming through Moab Utah, the jeeping capitol of the U.S of all places haha, and started getting the death wobble BAD! i could hardly go anywhere, and i still had a 5 hour drive home.. so i took it around to several people..... we checked and all the linkages and everything in the front end were solid tight.... still death wobble... so i took it to an alignment place, they rotated the tires... didn't work, they aligned it, didn't work, they adjusted some other crap... still didn't work.... so by now it was around 5 pm, and i had been there for over 6 hours, so i finally took it to this jeep shop right before it was about to close and told him i don't care what it costs just help me fix it because i needed to be back home... he stood back, and looked at it for all of 2 seconds and said, set your toe a little bit out, and it will fix it. Well, i figured i might as well try it and so a did it, and sure enough no more death wobble, and its been going for 4 months now with not even the slightest hint of death wobble.... The simplest and cheapest thing ended up being my cure. He said that its one of the number one causes of death wobble aside from ball joints, and a bad track bar... so if those two are good, then i would try this. So just a thought, the best of luck to you though.
