Default Death Wobble :(

So i had my DW checked out by this guy at four wheeling of raleigh, he owns and operates it himself and has been building $70k rock crawling rigs way up till a few years ago when his son bailed on him, but anyway he knows what hes talking about and apparently i need new ball joints, gonna be like $600 for some Spicer ones hopefulyl thatll solve my death wobble. One more thing he mentioned is the track bar bushing is worn, its a rubicon express track bar do they sell replacements?

i had the same problem with my first cherokee. all traction bars have the same holes so these should work just fine. i bought some daystar bushings for it and it solved my problem here is the website check it out there cheap but really good. http://www.rockymountainsusp.com/W_p...tm#Track%20Arm. it could also be that your front axel is bent a little bit so i guess i hope that this helps

Yes RE sells replacements.

A recommendation would be to do the ball joints yourself and then just buy a completely new steering setup (currie as an example). This way you will end up with a stronger setup then before and have replaced all of your old steering equipment.

i dont have the patience to do anything on my jeep anymore without an extra car to drive when its not working and a garage to work on it in. i would like high steer but im not quite there yet. i HIGHLY doubt i bent a front axle, that would suck ***** big time, i dont see how id have done it anyway. i think my tires are also to blame they are torn up, they dont neccecarily have low tread but theyre cupped on the inside and in addition to that some lugs are as much as 1/6th of an inch lower than others, and that is NO JOKE, i didnt even think that was possible - nor do i have any idea how that happened. but im going to have this bushing replaced and hte ball joints done it better be okay by then or im going to be one mad jeeper, already did the damn wheel bearings too. i did get a nice big beefy BDS steering stabilizer for the front, it helped a little now at least its semi-driveable haha. oh yea, and anyone know where i can get the alignment #s for a 4.5" RE lift?

The tires would definately have something to do with it. I would get the tires replaced, or at least rebalanced and rotated, and replace the trackbar bushings. That might take care of it. I know that I had it bad and got my tires balanced and it has been good ever since. It came on real quick, and I had no idea that tire balance would have such an affect on it! Anyway, good luck, hope you get it fixed real soon!!

well i found an interesting way to reduce my death wobble to a meer shimmy... air down the front tires a bit this helped to flatten out the tread. I was going to just put new 33x12.5 BFG ATs on it but i dont think that will solve the problem, it may mask it and im sure the car will ride better but how long untill the death wobble eats up those tires too? so i guess ive just got the LONNNG and expensive route of ball joints, alignment, balancing, re-tightening, and re-tireing the car...

DW is almost alway due to worn or wrong length track bars. your DW might have caused the ball joint to go out

x2 i had bad death wobble and it was my trac bar, the dw killed my ball joints so i replaced the trac bar.. got it close to aligned as possible.. and no death wobble.. ( hence it was the trac bar) after that i replaced the ball joints and the steering with curries hd tie rod kit then got it aligned. i havent felt even a shake since! darn trac bar also if you have had this dw for awhile look on ur frame around your steering box where it bolts to the frame for any cracks on the frame. ( happened on my buddies xj)

Yea well the guy said one of hte bushings was bad, also on my adjustable track bar at the part where you adjust it it was very loose. can a shop (like my jeep mechanic i was talking about) adjust this track bar for me? i guess ill do that first and foremost but im sure the ball joitns will be needed ot be replaced too.

DW is a result of worn or loose trackbar bushings or control arm bushings. You may have bad ball joints too but that is NOT a contributor to the DW. Thats my position and I am stickin' to it.

well fact is this guy has been in the industry since the 60s and his business up untill a few years ago comrpised of bulding $70,000 rock crawling rigs for competitions so i think he might know a thing or 2 ..

there are many contributors to dw..
