Death wobble
My beloved '92 Cherokee Laredo has developed a nasty death wobble at 55 MPH...can anyone tell me how to tell if tie rod ends are bad? They appear good...tires are fairly new, shocks less than a year old, everything looks good to my untrained eyes!

The biggest cause of dw on in xj is track bar related, usually axle side. I would look there first and see if the hole has been ovaled slightly because then it would allow side to side movement. If that's not it than you should check all brushing related to the front axle, and play in anything connecting to the front

IS jeep lifted??????? the list of items to check and repair for Death Wobble includes all suspension and steering related compenent and settings, EXCEPT the steering stabilizer. That means the Bushings, bearing, ball joints TREs, trackbar, shocks, alignment and a few more can cause and contribute to DW. The Main cause of DW is WORN parts.

Thanks for the suggestions....Jeep is not lifted, totally stock. Has 184,000 miles so hardly broke in! Gonna get greasy tomorrow and check all parts. I live in the boonies in Colorado so put a lot of miles on it every day, and the wobble is annoying. BTW it does go away if I speed up to like 60 if that matters.

Checking those front end components really requires two people. I did a check by myself and missed a badly worn track bar joint at the frame end and the tie rod end where it bolts to the pitman arm off the steering box. With my daughter working the steering wheel back and forth with me underneath the areas of play were readily visible. Now that I've replaced my track bar and the aforementioned tie rod end my front end problems are cured for all of $60 in parts and a $10 tie rod removal tool from NAPA.

I have the same problem going on I replaced the track bar tie rod ends steering damper went away for a bit and it came back so I looked on alldata at the tsb and alot of complaints on that and it said to replace upper and lower control arms I don't know how true that is but that's the direction I'm thinking about going

Yep I experienced my first DW kinda scary, only bushing I can find worn is the lower short arm link to the subframe, not sure but guess I'll shot gun it and throw parts at it, however I was told over inflated tires can cause this problem? My 33's are set at 30 psi gonna drop to 20 and give it hell and see what happens.

Have you already checked these? did not really see anyone answer your question, so, this will give you an idea on checking tie rod ends

Also, if you have checked all your components and did not see anything, also check your engine mounts, they can be bad and not look it from above.
