Default DEATH JERK!

Ok, so I'm calling this a 'Death Jerk' so if there's an actual term for this little gremlin, oh well. Anyway, I need some serious help. Can't figure out wtf is happening. While driving at usually about under the 2000 rpm range with more work/load from the motor I get a serious jerk as if the whole drivetrain seizes for a split second. Now it affects the WHOLE system because I'd imagine if it was just the motor I would still be rolling regularly. But when this 'death jerk' happens it just jerks my whole jeep. I couldn't even get my jeep to do such a jerk it I slammed on the brakes. Now, driving to work one day it started doing it a lot more and more violently until I died on the side of the road bout less than a quarter mile away from work. Had it towed to a shop and what it was is that the fuel pump gave out because the fuel filter was so damn clogged. After that it ran fine for a while. Then just recently, she started giving me the jerk a little now and then, not too serious until one night it did it more than often. So I went to work and got another fuel filter and changed it. Sadly it didn't kill the gremlin. My main concern is just today on the way home from work, it did it a hell of a lot as if I was gonna die on the side of the road again, but I made it home. Can't figure out why its doing this. And this seems to be a reoccurring problem. I put in a new cap and rotor, wires, new TPS, distributor is pretty new too, ignition control module pretty new, alternator pretty new, battery pretty new with new terminals, new fuel pump and filter, spectre intake, exhaust, 6" lift 325/60/R15 tires, a bit of accessories (roof lights, fog lights, H4 headlights, subs, amp) Idk, half of that doesn't even matter but I'm just throwing things out there in case it all links to something somehow. Wish I could figure out the prob before I go to work tomorrow. ANY help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

Sorry this is so damn long

Talk to the shop that replaced the pump. Did they clean the tank?

If your XJ has ever sat for a long period then the tank most likely has some gunk in it. If they just changed the pump then the new one is likely being affected by gunk in the tank.

Yeah I'll try to ask him, the shop used to be right down the road from Napa so when I got towed to work we just pushed it over to his shop during my lunch and in about 1-2 hours they replaced the pump and filter. charged me $50 for the job and I just had to pay for my parts at work (good thing working at Napa) Also, my Jeep has never really sat for any long periods of time. It's my daily driver and I drive around a mountain to get to work here on Maui.

Damn, I feel dumb now haha. My Jeeps an '87 and I think the CEL has been out of work for a long time now. I do as much of the work on my Jeep as possible, so everytime I've had a prob I fixed it myself. CEL or a way to get codes would've helped a lot in my XJ

Oh ok cool. Now I know that I just didn't have any CELs to begin with haha. Yeah I did the whole 'unplug and plug back in' thingy with my CPS (after trying to look up similar posts) and went for a test drive. Didn't give me the death jerk so I'm probably gonna look into that more and maybe get a new one. I know if I run my Jeep a little hard and get the motor a little more hot then I get some oil leakage out of the valve cover gasket towards the back (gonna change that soon) so that probably took a toll on the CPS. Thanks

Dang, I wanted to do that but I got the cork one instead. Heard that you're not supposed to crank down the bolts with the cork gasket because you can crack the gasket. Was advised to hand tight and give it about a quarter turn after that.

Just wondering if u are still having jerking issue with ir jeep? Not sure if it was same thing as mine but it sounds like it is. I have a 97 JGC, and I replaced sooo much stuff to only find out it was a sensor on my tranny that was bad. Might be worth a look at?

No problems now. I just unplugged and plugged back in the Crank Position Sensor which I believe is the sensor on the tranny that you're talking about and it's running fine now so I'm gonna put in a new one hopefully within the next couple of weeks.
