Default 1996 headlight switch.

My headlights wouldn't come on so I replaced the switch and now my dash lights and parking lights stopped working...headlights, blinkers and break lights work any suggestions....

Check to see if the contacts on the switch are bent where they make contact when you turn the switch to turn your dash lights on.

Yes I did just install a newer stereo and that is when the problem appeared. The only thing I could think of right now considering all the fuses look good is that the new stereo didn’t have a connection point for ground, so I just left the ground wire coming from the car wrapped in electrical tape. Could that be the problem?

Smile Fixed my dash lights after new radio install

So I found out what I did while installing my new stereo that caused my dash lights to go out (lights on the gauge cluster, center console, and shifters were not working, as well as the switch for fog lights). I purchased a metra wiring harness for the stereo just to get some new wiring, and it had an orange wire, but the wiring harness for the stereo did not. After soldering all the wires of corresponding colors together, I was left with the orange wire (stereo illumination; not necessary with newer stereos), and a black wire on the stereo wiring harness (which my dumb self didn't realize was the ground wire). I decided what the heck, I'll solder them together. I installed the stereo once I was all done with wiring and the stereo itself worked great, but I didn't notice the dash light issue until later on. Once I did, I realized that the black wire I soldered to the orange wire must need to be connected to the ground wire coming from the car, which I had taped up because I didn't connect it to anything. So I connected the two black wires and left the orange wire taped up (after learning from this forum it wasn't necessary) with no luck. I had no clue what was going on, but my dad suggested I check every single fuse in the car. After about ten minutes of looking at all the fuses under the hood, I found that the PCM (powertrain control module) fuse had broken. I figured that my connecting the ground wire from the stereo with the orange wire from the metra wiring harness probably broke the fuse. I once again connected the two black wires and left the orange wire taped up, and started the car to find that the dash lights worked. So if you have a similar problem, my suggestion would be to look at all of your fuses under the hood and inside the car and make sure all of your wiring is done correctly before anything else.

I had the same problem and there was a 20 amp fuse that was blown in the fuse box under the hood, mine was on a 98 Jeep Cherokee

The dash lights are wired through the factory stereo so when an aftermarket is put in you have to tie the dash lights back in somehow. I did this by pulling my cluster panel out, doing a little research to determine corresponding contacts for ground and back light, I determined the back light to be the orange wire on the connector to the cluster so I spliced into it while leaving it all connected and ran it to the orange wire on my stereo wiring harness. After lots of trial and error and thanks to other people posting their solutions I finally have beautiful, bright dash lights! Hope this helps someone!
What color wire did you end up hooking orange wire up too on the aftermarket harness? Is it there red "switched 12V"
