Default Dash coolant idiot light not working

Working on a few small issues with the Cherokee today and noticed my coolant temp idiot light does not illuminate when i turn the key. Any tests for this? I searched and found next to nothing dealing with this. Is it also possible to swap the guage cluster for a real guage cluster that has guages? These lights kill my soul a little every time I drive it, not knowing any real time info on her. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Key on. Unplug the sender wire and ground it. Dashlight should illuminate.

Yes, by all means, do it! Search around for the articles, they're around here somewhere. I just did this swap on my '96 and having actual gauges and a tachometer is glorious. Completely plug and play for the all-electronic clusters, I built one good cluster from two junkyard pulls from '95 models. The oil pressure switch above the oil filter and water temp switch in the back of the head need to be switched out for actual sensors, so make sure when you buy them that the part description specifies "with gauge" rather than "light". Honestly, this could not have been an easier thing to do.

Cheers!

Since u asked for thoughts, I'll give u mine. I've seen a few posts saying something like "I didn't see/wasn't paying attention to the temp gauge and it overheated". I've never seen a post saying "I didn't see the bright red overheat light".

Consider the best of both worlds.....large idiot light(s) in combo with a aftermarket temp gauge that will absolutely/positively be way more accurate (than factory) in telling u "real time info".
