Saw this rear axle for sale.
its has 4-10's, and disc brakes.
aside from the six lug bolt pattern, can they be swapped into
an XJ? Or is it too much of a hassle?

I remember seeing a write up somewhere that showed it was either wider or narrower than the XJ's.
I believe from all the write ups that the 8.8 explorer rear end is the closest to matching stock width.

It is 1.5 inches narrower than the XJ. Cut off all the existing mounts and weld on new spring perches and shock mounts. The biggest issue will be that you would 2 wheels with 5 lugs and 2 wheels with 6 lugs unless you have the axle shafts redrilled for the five lug rims. Some of the Isuzu Rodeos and Honda Passports can be found with factory 4.56 gears and limited slip diffs. Have a magnet with you to check the housing, after a certain year they were changed to the Dana 44HD which has an aluminum housing that can be easily bent with some hard wheeling.
