Do the rear Dana 44's in the older jeeps have any difference? did they upgrade or make any changes for 87 to 90?

Yeah the D44a is a GC D44, i'm starting a build and it is gonna be pure bred XJ the reason i ask is because i can get my hands on an 87 D44 right now but if they were improved later i'll just wait and get a later model one

i have only ever seen them i 87 model years. i've found 6 in total and they were all from an 87, cherokee or comanche.

i check all mj's and every xj from 84 to 94 in the wreckers.

for $200 i would definitely get it. If nothing else you can clean it, paint it, and sell it for around $400-$500 EASY. You could even sell it for that without cleaning it up as long as its in ok condition
