Default dana 44?

So my question is this: I have an 89 xj. 87-89 xjs that came with a tow package had a 44 in the rear. Mine has a hitch setup. I was wondering how to tell if I got lucky with the factory tow package and a 44? Or if the hitch is aftermarket. Thanks

i had an 89 and my 90 both had tow package and both had d35 stock.

i had 2 87's without tow package and both had d44 stock.

i haven't seen any other year other than the 87 that had the d44.

but get under the back and look, if it's oval, then it's a d35. if it's got flat sides, then it's the d44.

google d44 diff cover, they're all the same no matter what vehicle they're on.
