I recently picked up a dana 44 from the junkyard with 3.54 gears and ive heard there are 2 different axles that came in xjs and one you are unable to gear very high im looking to run 4.56 with 35s but im hoping i didnt get the wrong axle....is there a difference? If there is how can i tell?

You can go as high as you want provided you get the correct carrier. The carrier in your axle can be used for 3.73 and down gears.

You're going to need either a new carrier or a full case locker for 3.95 and higher gears.

If you have an XJ D44 you have a great axle.

Yeah, and IIRC the 8.25 has limited gear selections. I may be mistaken, I got a 44 from the factory, so I sometimes forget.

[Snicker]

A yota. Lulz.

I have an ARB locker in mine, 4.10 gears, and I love it. Beat on it with 33s and it took it like a champ.

so just outta curiosity, how did XJs come with 44s from the factory? i know they typically have turdy-fives. but my '95 has the 27 spline 8.25, and it had a tow package to get it that year. were there specific years that had it? or just certain engine/trans/package options that got the sought after D44.

You mind if I ask you both a question? Out of curiosity did either of your guys Dana 44 come with a factory limited slip diff? I have two and neither have them. Just asking out of curiosity sake.
