Default DANA 30's REGEAR

So i have a 96 with a ax15 i believe that the gears in it are 3.07's correct me if im wrong. I have dana 30 front and c8.25 27 spline rear both with the 3.07's but i have a dana 30 laying around from my last jeep which was an 1989 with auto tranny and it had 3.55's i think again correct me if im wrong and the rear was a dana 35 with a limited slip and 3.55's (police package i believe) my question to you is, for the Dana 30 front can i just simply take the 3.55 and put it into my other dana 30 with the 3.07's and should i swap in my dana 35 with the police package into my current jeep and remove the c8.25 27 spline? Would that be a good move sense i have 32 inch tires? I'm trying to get some of the lost power and mpg back from the current gear setting of 3.07's with the 32 inch tires. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated

You could but you would need the drive shaft from a stick shift xj with the 35 and u bolts and plates as they are different from the 8.25. Are you sure yor 8.25 is 27 and not 29 as 96 was the transition year .?

im not quite sure the research i did said that not many 96's came with the 29 spline im just assuming its 27 spline how can i tell? sense you mentioned that, how can i make sure they are 3.55's or 3.73's? and can i take the assembly inside the front dana 30 with the 3.55/3.73 into the one with the 3.07's (like a direct bolt in ) without any problems?

sounds like a lot of work for only slightly deeper gears to me. I'd just stay put until you can figure out how to do 4.10's. like swap in axles from a 4cyl or go 8.8 swap

if i re-gear t o 4.10's im probably going to keep the dana 30 but as for the c8.25 should i re-gear that or should i go with an 8.8. I'm looking for a direct bolt in. and do the axle shafts matter when regearing? or do i have to get different axle shafts? also could you link me a website that offers some cheap re-gear kits/lockers with 4.10's? everything i find is around 600 per set,,

I didn't say regear, I said swap. I'd go find an HP30 from a 4cyl xj with factory 4.10 gears and bolt that on. front end-done

then for the rear try to find an 8.25 with factory 4.10's in it. or if you can't find that for the rear then check yours, if it's 29 spline, regear it. or 8.8 or 44 swap. whatever you can do for the cheapest. I like 8.8 because it's beef and some come with factory 4.10's and LSD. so if you can find one for $100 then buy a swap kit for $120 and adapter for $30 it's cheaper than a regear.

stock axle shafts are fine until you lock it. you're only on 32's I'd just leave them for now

usa standard gears from here are pretty cheap http://www.ringpinion.com/default.aspx
sierra gears from here are cheap http://www.sierragear.com/
RWKHaus for install kits and carriers hands down http://www.rwkhaussupply.com/magento/
MAKE SURE to read all warranties before making a purchase. you may want to buy gears with a better warranty

If ax15 is orignial your 307s if production date on drivers door is 9 0f 96 or higher theres a chance of it being 29 spline im running one from a 2wd 9 of 96 i found in jy 4cy 410. Only forsure way is pull axle and count teeth . While in there count pinion and ring gear teeth divide smaller number into larger thats your ratio.

Thanks for the advice guys i really appreciate it. so last but not least as a stocker axle which do you think is the best for offroading the 32's the dana 35 with 3.55's and limited slip, or the c.825 27 spline 3.07's open diff? In regards to durability and functionality.

I'd just leave it at your current setup. the only situation where a dana 35 is an upgrade is if you happen to have a vehicle with a dana 25 rear. and even then it isn't much of a jump

but if you really feel like going to the trouble, D35 should be ok on 32's. open 3.07's to a limited slip and 3.55's really wouldn't be worth the time or trouble to me

I ran a locked 27 spline 8.25 with 33s for a year with a light foot. Some mud, mostly rocks.

Nobody ever puts a d35 in. Its considered a sorry rear and everybody plans on swapping them out. I like the 8.25 and have known many people to run them hard with no issues. All that work to go from 3.07 to 3.55 wouldn't be worth it. I would jump to at least 4.10. Just realize you will need a new carrier for the front. Anything bigger than a 3.55 will require a different carrier for the front.
