Dana 30 regear pains!
Im doing a dana 30 low pinion gear change. Its a tj with factory 3.07 gears. Im replacing them with a used set of Dana 4.10 gears and carrier from another jeep. Here's my issue. When I use the pinion like it came from the other jeep im a little too shallow. The oil slinger is .060. With that my drive side is on the heel and my coast side is in the toe. If I add a .005 shim, thats the smallest shim I have it somewhat centers my pattern but leaves me with a long sharp flat edge on the bottom of the mark. My expierence tells me that my pinion is too deep when I don't get the oval mark but a sharp line. I'm not sure where to go from here, I've been screwing with it so long now that I have melted my brain. I have done quite a few gear changes but never on the front or with a dana 30. I have seen on here where guys recomend tossing the factory .060 oil slinger for a smaller one and shimming up from there. Im just not sure where to go from here. Ill try to put a pic up of what the gears look like now as soon as I figure out how.

Thats what I thought too. I have a .030 slinger. I guess I will start with it and add a few shims. It just puzzles me, the 4.10 pinion came from another tj and I left the factory slinger on it thinking Dana had used the .060 slinger in their original setup. I had planned on switching slingers I just wanted to hear someone else say the same thing I was thinking. I hear of people using about .035 shim on the pinion depth with these dana 30's. I just never could figure out if they are counting the slinger or not. I had planned on starting at about .050 by using a .030 slinger and .020 shims, because right now with the thick slinger I am at .060. Thanks for the input.

No offense taken by the way.

My concern is that you have 1 set of standard (LP) and 1 set of reverse (HP). They are not interchangeable.
The gears on left are low pinion, right is high pinion.
The gears in the pic are for different axles, but the pic does show the difference in the tooth direction.

Sorry no more pics. I think I got the right gears. I know the pic I put up of the pattern is bad but you can see the direction of the teeth in it. Im pretty sure they are the right gears. I wish I had them out I would post a picture.

Like I said, its driving on the coast side. The hp dana 30 drives on the drive side so I pretty sure I have the right gear. I think I just need to decrease the pinion depth and keep adjusting backlash until I can get a decent pattern. This thing has been a pain in the rear. I also would never recomend a motive brand instal kit for this axle. It only came with five pininon shims and no slinger. I had to get a buddy to bring me a .030 slinger and shims from one of his kits.
