Default DANA 30 locker question

97 XJ 4.0. Stock axles. Dana 30 and Chrysler 8.25. The chrysler is a 29 spline axle, my question is, is the Dana 30 a 27 Spline axle? I am going to buy a ECTED locker for the thing and wanna make sure of the spline count before i buy it. Anyone running this locker? I've got 3.55 gears as well.

i just put a lunchbox in my 8.25 (aussie locker) and love it but i would say nay to a front unless the ECTED to speak of is an electric locker and it is my belief that the axle spline for the fronts are all the same spline axle we just have bigger ujoints in the later models

Front is 27 spline. Ected is a good locker and a LSD when not engaged but you void the warranty if you go over 35s. If you plan on running 3.55s forever get it but if you plan on regearing do it now cause that is the break for the 30 and you'll have to buy a new locker later if you gear it.

i've never played with d30s but i know you can buy ring gear spacers if you need or thick cut gears for most axles to make up for the carrier offset just food for thought i don't know if it is an option for us though

The ECTED is not a good locker...it's not a locker at all. It does not mechanically lock.

I've seen them slip when engaged and the clutch discs wear out just like any other LSD.

Get a real locker. ARB or an Eaton E-Locker. You won't regret it.

you DO NOT want to put and automatic locker or lsd in the front it will make the truck almost undrivable in 4x4 if you have snow or are on loose roads it will pull the truck all over. and with us having no HUBs so to speak it will kill front joints.. you really have to run a selectable locker in the front

If you have a 231 a front lunchbox is fine In my opinion. If you have a 242 and you use the full time option I'd skip it and go with a selectable like an E locker or ARB

Keep in mind some people think it'll just constantly lock.. Not the case, it will lock when you put pressure on the gas when 4x4 is engaged. If you're turning, dont put your foot on the gas. I've driven with a front auto locker just fine in the snow, ice, gravel, grass, etc. You just cant drive your XJ like its your moms Honda Civic

If you USE the Full time I'd just keep the lunch box in the rear, save up and buy an electric up front.

Personally I use 4x4 FT or PT only when its snowing anyway so I never worried about running a lunchbox up front.

Isn't the ECTED an ELECTRIC? and im running 31's right now with 5 inches of lift. i don't plan on going over 33's. I will putt 33's on in prob a year. I thought the ECTED was great from some reviews people have given me but if its going to slip and wear stuff then idk......

http://www.auburngear.com/aftermarke...3179&setRolls=[type+Function]

Its fully refundable if anything happens. I called the guy, he told me he hasn't had any problems with people have clutches or anything inside the axle break if they stay within 31's, 32's or 33's max. as much as i would love the Eaton E-locker its a little out of my price range when i found a ECTED for more than half the price of the Eaton. I am a full time college student so money isn't coming in at a quick rate right now, i off road when i can, its rare that i get my jeep stuck with the aussie in my 8.25 but i still want a little help up front. I think i'll try the ECTED and see how it performs and i will let everyone know, if i dont like it, i'll save up and selll the ected and buy a Eaton or OX. Thanks for all the honest responses, it really helped!

The ECTED does not mechanically lock, ever. It uses an electromagnet to generate more pressure on the clutch disks, that's all. I've seen them fail on more than one occasion and would never install one on my heep or in anyone else's rig.

Auburn's ad's are very misleading.

Search the web and you'll find a lot of disgtuntled ECTED owners.

If you want a true locker (selectable) get an Eaton E-Locker or an ARB.
