Dana 30 Gear Change
It's finally time to change the gears in my front axle. I already put an 8.8 in the rear. I had to install gears in that axle, wasn't too bad. I've got 1000 miles or so on the rear axle. I've read the FSM on setting up the D30, doesn't look too much different than the 8.8. I've got an additional Dana 30 axle on my work bench. I'll get this axle all set up, then swap them out one for one. I see two differences:
The differential bearing shims are between the carrier and the bearings. Plan to burr out the original bearings to use as a pair of setup bearings. Otherwise, seems like a lot of yanking and pressing bearings on the carrier. Worked good on the pinion bearings in the 8.8, any issue with doing it on the D30 carrier bearings?
The pinion uses a preload shim instead of a crush sleeve. Though the setup appears to be the same, tighten nut until you hit 'X' preload with an inch pound torque wrench.
Any special steps with the D30 that are different from the 8.8?
Any tips/tricks to make this easier?
