Being that your XJ is a 98, you also have the advantage of having the 29 spline 8.25. Up to 96 the 8.25 has 27 spline shafts that are actually smaller than the D35. The only strength advantage the early 8.25 has over the D35 is the larger axle tube which is stronger. 97 -01 XJs have the 29 spline axle shafts which provide increased strength. The only downside to the 29 spline 8.25 is the limited amount of aftermarket parts available. Currently the only locker offered for the 29 spline is the Aussie, which is a very good locker by the way.

they told me they charge more for the front axle, and you also have to get new carriers for the new gears

Auburn makes a tight LS for the 8.25 too.

The 27 spline 8.25s aren't much better than the 35.

A 29 spline is comparable to a XJ 44 and if you add some upgraded shafts to the 29 spline I'd go as far as to say it's as strong as a stock 44.

I love my combo. Lol

Ok now im confused. My rear axle has the rubber plug that says Dana on it yet the cover itself is unmarked and looks like the 8.25".

I got a rear diff gasket from NAPA and from me describing the axle and telling the parts guy that the rubber plug says Dana he gave me the gasket for a Dana 35C. the gasket did not even come close to being the right size, it was way too small. Did he give me the wrong gasket or do I have the 8.25"? If anyone has the Fel-Pro part number for either gasket I think i have the box and could check and see what gasket I got.

Both coevers typically have the rubber plug so you cant use that to disquish. either measure the axle tubes or look at the pics and see if it looks like the top pic or the bottom that I posted.

As for the gearing... I always forget about the cost of a new/used carrier.
