to the guy who was talking bout putting 30 splines in a dana 35.

DUDE. that's over 1000 dollars to put the new shafts, new bearings, new carrier or spiders in and have the gears set if you swap gears.

for $250 or less you can have a MUCH better axle and even upgrade to discs.

why would you then spend the money going to a "super" 35?

Firstly, He said this was done by the PO. DUDE!!

Secondly, I have a friend with a D35 and super 35 kit, Detroit locker, on 33" tires, and his has never broke either. He is liberal with the skinny pedal to say the least. Where I like to finesse my rig, he blasts it. Are there better axles out there, absolutly, can you wheel on a D35, yes you can. I'd say find a different axle when you can and build it how you want it, until then, wheel what you have!!

hey dude, read page 3 where richxj89said that with 30 spline shafts etc. it's a stout axle.

then re-read my statement.

then pull your head outta ur **** (j/k) and add up numbers.

the dana 35 is a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY inferior axle to anything else, and not worth investing any money into other than an oil change and a millermatic locker.

it has a smaller, thinner ring and pinion gear, a smaller, thinner carrier, and smaller diameter, thinner axle tubes. this is all inferior, and not worth additional expenditures. sure, you can make them "decent"....but then you still have a dana 35, and you're still more prone to blowing gears than anyone with even a 27 spline 8.25.

I've blown 35's every which way. spun diff on axle tubes, blown ring and pinion gears shooting teeth out of diff cover, blown spiders, broken shafts, sheared pinion, and even got to "work on" (remove and **** can) one with a sheared carrier.

they are inferior. some guys get lucky. most don't. so don't EVER try and tell me (or anyone else) that it is wise to drop a grand, much less any time into trussing, a dana 35...because anyone who does say that, is wrong.

to the OP. run the rear you have. my best friend has a super 35 kit in his tj and we wheel the snot out of that thing on 35 inch boggers. i would say with 30 spline shafts you are better off with that than a 8.25

OK, verified that my head was out in the open and breathing good air for a change! He is NOT the OP, and neither of them have talked about buying anything. So, I still have no idea where your post was directed. If the parts were put in by the PO, then he has a decent axle, sorry it's a fact. He didn't spend the money on it, someone else did. I wouldn't think that he would have to go yank it out RFN, to upgrade to something else. Like I stated earlier, I think there are FAR better axles out there, I happen to have one of them, so I do think that in time it would be a good idea to change it. But I know for a fact from personal experience, and the experiences of friends that the D35 is at least OK. If it sucked so bad, how would it hold up in a heavier ZJ with a V8 in front of it. I had one, and I wheeled it, so I know that it held up. With intelligent driving, you can make things last, that is all I'm trying to say. He definitely has time to look at his options, and build exactly what he wants, not rush right out, and buy the first thing he sees. The way some of the guys in this post have talked about it, you'd think he was going to break something just going to get a gallon of milk, and we all know that is not the case. AHHH, fresh air feels good!! Thanks for checkin in!!

I needed that!!

*sigh*.

I did not say that it was the OP who posted that. I was arguing with richxj89. yes, he did suggest spending money based on the simple fact that he suggested 30 spline axleshafts. those are $400 alone. and not worth the investment into a dana 35.

so, you are still mis-interpreting what I posted, and you are still not correct about what another reader (NOT the OP) should do if they have a dana 35.

to the rest of you viewing. maybe I'm seeming like a dick, but my posts were not interpreted correctly and I am trying to correc that misinterpretation.

bottom line; if you have a stock dana 35 DO NOT invest money in it. maybe weld the spider gears, then beat it til it breaks. but make provisions for replacement, because it WILL break. if you wheel hard on it, you know this. many of you have already had these experiences...i know for fact that I can never drive anything with a dana 35, even on the street, because I will break it sooner than later.

that's because I USE my vehicle as it was intended...to beat the **** out of it and then upgrade so it can come back begging for more. if that's not your mentality, then don't wheel because every scratch, dent, and scuff is gonna make you go home crying.

funny you should say it that way.

when I launched all the teeth from the ring and pinion, I was travelling down the interstate doing the speed limit. this was an open, 3.55 gears.

they will break. you won't know when until it happens. end of story.

Yup! 9" in the rear and a 44 in the front. That is what I am going to do. Going back to the 30 and 35 they are just fine for a once every two months wheeling. Nothing wrong with running them.

Then something else was wrong with the axle. Street driving shouldn't break a D35, period. I misinterpreted the post, because it was obviously unclear, so, my bad I guess. As far as this conversation goes, I'm over it. We will simply have to agree to disagree. Do I think you are being a dick, absolutely not, nor am I. I certainly hope that two grown men can have a conversation, and a disagreement, and not take it personally. All is well on my end, and I hope yours too. No hard feelings what so ever, not everyone will agree every time, it's simple fact of life!! Take care!!

i never suggested upgrading an xj dana 35 i just said that a super 35 will hold up fine to 35's and it will. i also said that since he already has a super 35 hes better off sticking with that instead of switching to a 29 spline 8.25 like some have suggested.

OP if you plan on running larger than 35's get a new axle. but dont get and 8.25 or an xj d44. the strength increase wont be enough to justify it. if you plan on running 35+ get a 9 inch or bigger and learn how to fabricate.

and for other people reading this. i agree with jeepcomj. putting any money into an xj d35 is just plain ignorant and stupid. in the case of the op, the deed has already been done. yes the money could have been spent better but now that its spent, just run it.

now for some tj guys a super 35 makes sense. the tj doesnt have a plentiful axle to upgrade to like the 8.25 in the xj. some have d44's but they are hard to find. the super 35 kit is good for guys that dont have the fab skill or the shops around them to do the custom work involved with setting up bracketry on a 8.8 or better axle.

By no means do I wish to keep the arguing going but I feel that there is one other thing to mention when it comes to axle selection: housing strength. By putting a super 35 kit in a d35, you address the weak axles but the housing remains really quite flimsy. I'm guessing this is why a truss was recommended for the OP in a previous post as he already has strong shafts so a truss (assuming he can weld/fabricate himself) might be something to consider (depending on cost of course). As far as I know, the 8.25 housing is almost as strong as a d44 (which is another reason why it is a recommended upgrade from the d35 regardless of spline count) and the ford 8.8 is actually a bit stronger as long as you weld the axle tubes all the way around where they meet the center section.

The weak housing, along with everything else mentioned in previous posts, is why it really doesn't make sense to put any money into the d35. I cringed when I had to do the brakes on mine haha.
