Default d30 gearing question

i got a 99 high pinion d30 with 3.07s in it right now. im wondering if i can get gears from the jy out of a 4 banger with 4.10s. will the older styles work with the new high pinion axle? is there any difference between the two that would make the gears not work?

are you talking about taking out the ring and pinion gears from the jy and putting them in your axles? it would probably be best just to get the whole axle from the jy and swapping them out. but yes the older gears will fit in your case as long as it high pinion to high pinion axle.

no you should be fine... i'm doing the same swap in a week or two or whenever i get time... i picked up a D30 front axle out of a 90 wranlger with 4.10's ($100) and an 8.25 out of a 93 XJ with 4.10's ($75)....

putting them in my 98 XJ axles.. the front is a direct carrier swap.. no real adjustments needed.... all the D30 cases were made from the factory almost dead nut exact same.. nuttin really changed through the years... my 8.25 axle is a different story.. diff spline counts and case differences so they actually need to be re-installed profesionally

No, you'll need a 3.73 and up carrier.

They should, i have never looked at a stock 4 banger axle, but if it is 4.10's then yes cause a stock carrier cant go past 3.90

sorry for hi-jacking but, how do you tell the difference between low and high ratio carriers?

from what i've been told as long as you get the full carrier out of the axle.. then you can just install the 4.10 carrier right into your front axle (thats the thing that the ring and pinion bolt to)

now if your only buying the ring and pinion set without a carrier then yes you will need to buy a new carrier to put them in cuz they won't match into your 3.07 carrier
does that clear it up some?

Can anyone confirm for sure that you can just do a carrier swap and have a proper wear pattern on a front D30?

well i used a cattle paint marker. one of those paint stick things and i marked the ring gear, spun it around a few times, and checked it out. the wear pattern was exact to the marks the gears had when it was in the other axle. the paint was exactly where the wear marks were.
