You're not supposed to unless you plan on re-welding it. I think he means cutting right before the pinch welds, though. That might make it a little cleaner looking in the end. I just did a whole bunch of vertical cuts on mine and folded them in and it doesn't look terrible. At first, I thought it looked like crap because I was sitting down folding them and I could see all the slices along the edge. Then when I stood up and looked at it, I couldn't see them anymore. I might add a little Bondo along the edge to smooth it out a little, but this weather's been crappy lately, so we'll see how it goes.

Just a word of caution on folding the rear. When the sheetmetal gets folded over, it leaves a great area for mud, sand and salt to get stuck and hide. This will start the rust process in a hurry. Before I folded mine, I cleaned the wheel well very good. I made sure everything was 100% dry. After I did the folding, I used an automotive body caulk to seal off the entire back side of folds so NOTHING can get in there and or is all water proof. This will keep your xj from getting new quarter panel cancer from doing this mod.

Very true, Make sure it's clean, fold the tabs over and make sure there's as tightly pressed in the fender as possible. I caked wheel well ruberizer sealat crap all through there.

A for not cutting the pinch welds, cut in between them

I just made sure to cut my slits in between the pinch welds. Turned out fine. I cut a little to high up and ran into some problems but I took care of that with some fiberglass work and some bedliner. Worked really well

Quick Q, I cut both sheets of metal in the rear of mine, (Thought I did enough research...but eh you live and learn right?) So now you can see the seam is wide open, how should I fix that? Just mig weld it back together or get metal to cover it? I was going to diamond plate trim the truck anyway so would that suffice if I put an L shaped lip on it?

i cut al of mine with a dremil tool and a diamond cutting disk in the rear i made sure it was below the pinch welds and then i took a rubber hammer to it and bent it flat. looks decent i think, in the front i used the dirt mark from the fender flares and cut close to that then i made sure to take a mallet to the inner pinch seam as well
