not sure with the newer jeeps, but my jeep has two vac lines going to the accumulator ball. one small, one large. small one has an elbow on the end.
both need to be hooked up to the vac ball.
check the ball, see if you have two nipples.

I have no vac ball. Lol. That's the problem. I capped of the small line with the elbow and I have cruise now. Does the larger line come from up by the passenger side firewall near the a/c stuff? Cause I have a line that has electrical tape wrapped around it up by the battery. This line is half hardline and half soft (rubber). Thx. I just picked up a service manual so I'm gonna figure it out. It sounds like I can do without the vac ball as long as everything is buttoned up. Ie. No open vac lines! Lol
I searched before posting this - I do not want to rob this post but my problem is confusing.
99 2WD Cherokee - 4.0 L - 168K miles
My light comes on but the set button does not work. As the previous posts have shown, I have searched all over but cannot locate an accumulator ball or the parts that resemble the picture.
I have a Chilton repair guide (#40602) - the causes for inoperative cruise control listed are:
Blown fuse - my light works so this is not the issue
Short or open in cruise control circuit - would not think this is the issue but not certain
The rest of these are possibilities but I do not know how to check each one
Leaking vacuum circuit
Faulty cruise control switch
Faulty stepper motor
Faulty transducer
Faulty speed sensor - $24 at RockAuto.com
Faulty cruise control module
My guess is it is something other than the wiring and switch in the column. I am tempted to just buy a speed sensor for the low cost but would like the Experts here thoughts before I start spending money.
I am getting really, really tired of driving without the cruise.
Thanks, Dave.

I found the problem - this was embarrasingly stupid.
From Aerosynch's reply, I opened the hood and started the process all over again. First off, to be honest, I was not certain what the vacuum canister looked like. Based on some of the other replies and the fact most everyone here has a 4x4 I was thinking my layout is different under the hood. Once I figured that out based on the last reply - the vacuum canister and its location, I traced the lines. The problem line was not cracked, it was disconnected!
For over 18 months I have been driving around with this darn thing and all it needed was connected back to the engine - Unbelievable.
A small hose clamp later today and that baby is not coming off again.
Oh well, we all learn some thing new every day.
Thanks,
Dave.
