Default Cruise control acting funny

I have an 01 cherokee 3in. 31s etc. The cruise control was working fine until today when you set it, the speed doesn't stay. The rpms increase and so does the speed. The speed keeps increasing until you tap the brakes. I use the cruise often and need to find out what the problem is. Any advice to the possible issue would be extremely helpful

Thanks

Sounds like you have a leak in the vacuum lines. The vacuum canister is located inside the front bumper on the passenger side, start there and follow the hoses. I'd check that all the lines aren't rotting and that they're connected.

That would be a good starting point. Another thought is maybe the sensor that calculates the vehicle speed is going bad and showing a decrease that is causing the unit to try to accelerate to keep the speed stable. I'm not sure where that would be located, but it's probably on the transmision somewhere.

If it continues to accelerate after releasing the 'set' button, I might think there is something going on with the servo other than a leaky vac connection; I think that would cause deceleration. Vacuum drawn on the servo physically 'pulls back' the cable and opens the throttle, so less vac, less pulling on the cable. Check the throttle linkage?? Also, you may have a bad cruise control module.

Yeah, the vehicle speed sensor could be faulty, or the input from it, as interpreted by the cruise control module, could be the problem: the speed sensor could be fine, but the module could be bad.

Thanks for the input. I tried it again on my way to work and it just continues to increase. I will try to find the problem this weekend. Any other thoughts or ideas would be great.
