Thx, I assuming you are talking about the hole.

Would the sludge considered excessive?

Thx.

Depends on the miles on the motor.

With the low compression numbers you listed I'd suggest a complete rebuild.

I believe those are really low compression numbers too. And there is no way you should be able to turn the crank that easy. No rebuild necessary, you need to replace that motor- not worth the rebuild.

147k miles but runs really good.

I read here that a slacked timing chain could also cause low compression, so i'm gonna replace it and do a test again and hopefully get better result.

Btw, looking at the timing cover, doesn't the sludge looks really bad?

BAH.. Heres my '92. 250K on the clock. Had to replace the front cover as the balancer ate a hole into it...

I have WAAAAY more slop than yours. Bonus! More sludge! Runs like a TOP too. Starting to lose power though. Probably due to the excessive slop in my chain. I was on a tight schedule and NOBODY in a city of 150K had a timing set IN STOCK for a 4.0. I just buttoned it up.. Been a year now.

Heres a current pic of my baby. New junkyard lift installed.

Just replace your chainset and drive it. Change the fluids regularly. It should last for a LOOONG time.

yea, but did your crank slop back and forth like the OP's did?

I find it hard to believe that it ran good and didn't make any noise. I'm rebuilding my engine right now and with no timing chain on, but with the head on and spark plugs in I can't budge my crank a millimeter without my breaker bar on the crank bolt.

Worst case scenario, would any I6 engine work or should i look for one that's on a 99' Cherokee?

Hey Frank, thx for your comments!

I'm just preparing for the worst, so here is my understanding....
I6 engine from 96-01 Cherokee would be a direct replacement, right?
How about I6 engine from Grand Cherokee or Wrangler?

Again, thank you for all the advice.

Yes, they are the same engines. The differences between the various years is sendors and heads.

Yes, I have QUITE a few degrees of movement on the crank BEFORE the cam starts moving. lol. Retarded valve timing..

I think the compression readings are probably a little low, but they ARE balanced and that is, relatively speaking, more important than low. If the vehicle was running well before, I'd Put a NEW chain and gear on it, fresh oil and filter, and drive it. probably will run for another 100,000. Mine has 213,000 on it as we speak, with nothing ever been done to it.

Those are the numbers without WOT (only found out recently that i need to WOT when testing)....will get another set of numbers as soon as as put the jeep back together.

New gears and chain in!
Should be back and running tomorrow, except my timing cover/oil pan gasket didn't hold (should have left the original oil pan gasket alone instead of cutting it ).

I'll do another test tomorrow.

Should have kept my 00'
