Default Crankshaft position sensor different between years?

I need a new CPS for my 1997 XJ 4.0L. The pre-1997 CPS are significantly cheaper than the 1997-on ones. Is there any actual differences between them? AFAIK both trucks use the same engine/transmission so I don't know why they wouldn't be interchangeable.. It seems like the pre-97's use a pin style contacts and 97-on use blade style, but if I were to swap the plugs would everything work the same?

Don't chance it. Leave your wiring intact and buy the proper crank sensor. Changes were made for a reason; don't second guess the design engineers on these things.

And I highly recommend you use a MOPAR crankshaft position sensor. About the same money and they are the most reliable crank sensors sold for the XJ.

Not sure about flywheel changes but generally changing out te entire computer system from OBD-1 to OBD-2 does things like that.

+1. So many threads on here where guys are on their 3rd or 4th Autozone CPS. (As in, they have been stranded 3-4 times.) Also a lot of threads where folks don't think the new one is bad and continue to throw parts/time/money at their XJ on a eild goose chase. Where's the savings in that?

X2 I spent over three grand trying to figure out a no start issue. Witch ended up being the CPS after about a year got the Mopar CPS as a last resort to selling the jeep and I've had the beast for five years now !

I replaced the cps with. Napa three times.
