Default Crankshaft Position Sensor

I have a 96 Cherokee that has a no start problem, I checked the fuel line and it is getting pressure. I also changed the coil and that changed nothing. So research led me to finding that problems with the crankshaft position sensor are pretty common on these things.

Here's the deal, I purchased a new one and got it installed , only to find that the connector was different on it than what was on the old one. So I spliced the old connector to the new sensor and got it connected. The truck still does the same no start thing.

Why did the sensor have a different connector, and is it possible that the new one is broken as well? also is the sensor that finicky as to not work with the spliced end? What would you do next?

HELP! I need to drive this thing to work tonight!

Thank you

Sounds like they gave you the wrong one or for a different year IMO...Tj

did you have to shim your sensor? Sounds like what TrekkerJmm said about the different year for the sensor.

What are the symptoms? No spark?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the wrong sensor isn't going to work for you and you will need the correct one... however I would try to reset the computer before tearing it apart again.

Disconnect the negative batt terminal then press and hold the horn button... reconnect and try again.

K, cool thanks for the info so far. Would you guys happen to know what the part number is of the sensor? I've looked around and I found the part number 83100067 for an 89/90 but I'm not sure if it is the same for the 96.

Definitely sounds like they gave you the wrong part. I went through tps's on my last xj like hot cakes. I had it for 2 years and replaced the tps 4 times. I blame the exhaust setup or lack there of haha.

Alright thanks guys, it looks like I am getting a ride tonight, but I think I figured out the problem with the connectors. The truck was manufactured in October of 96, so I thought maybe It used some parts from the 97 Model year, the vin and everything says it is a 96.. odd huh? I got to researching, and it looks like every parts store website I look at has the same harness I have for the 97 and up. There must have been a midyear change to the newer connector or something... to bad I hacked up the old one, anybody want a basically new sensor? haha jk.

Basically what I am saying is that it looks like the 97 part is going to work. I will get back to you guys with what happens, if anything.

It definitely looks like the first one. It is a 96 for sure, but the connector for the sensor is from the 97. My parts guy knows what he is doing, I guess, I got the 97 sensor and it runs like a champ!

I've read somewhere before that the 96 had 97 parts late in the production run.
