Default Crankshaft position sensor

Hello everyone new to the group and having an issue with my 1999 Cherokee sport, 4.0L, auto. I'll try to do the short version. Had issue about a year ago and turned out it was the crankshaft position sensor, I replaced it with a oem sensor and no change... took it to a shop and they told me I had installed a position sensor for a 2.5L. Me not knowing any better said ok put the correct one in... problem solved... now I'm having the exact same issue and I'm looking to replace it yet again. So my question is as I look online for a new sensor I'm seeing a lot of them say 4.0L/2.5L are they the same and the shop I took it too did some type of shenanigans with me or are they intact a different sensor? The rig only has 120k miles on it so question two... why am I going through crankshaft position sensors?

Ok, I've been told by a number of people to run only oem sensors and electrical parts on these rigs... is this also true?

I run both ways. If I have choice and the $$$ I try to go OEM. I needed an IAC a number of yrs back. Our one local MOPAR dealer was on backorder so I ordered A STANDARD brand from Rock Auto. Still working fine.

Your CEL on? Any codes?

I got an aftermarket cps and the wires were a lot shorter than OEM, still works although I wish I had the time to get the OEM

OEM is preferred as the XJ can be very picky with that sort of thing. Sometimes they dont care. It depends on what mood they are in.

Yep, what he said!

It might be that the shop put in an aftermarket sensor, which is why its failed so soon.

I'd say replace it yourself with an OEM, and see how it goes.

Spend a few minutes searching the forum for CPS. Most folks here swear by OEM parts for CPS. I have one or two good articles bookmarked, like this one. You can do the job yourself if you have a bit of time...

I think this is the OEM part what you want, but you can search for proper fit for yourself.

I changed the cps with an oem replacement and my problem is still there, I'm wondering if either I got a bad one out of the box which I've been told happens from time to time or if I'm having a different problem...

Sounds like you are up to 3 different CPSs (if I read the post correctly). If you are still having "the issue", you are correct in thinking that it is probably not the CPS. Perhaps, just describe the issue and then go from there.

Is there away to post a short video here? I have a video of exactly what it's doing. I have another thread explaining the issues I'm having... I believe the video would help explain a great deal more than my explanation
