Cranks with a clunk but won't start
I know, I know, this subject has been beaten to death. I've been searching and reading for a few hours now and don't see the clunk issue and how it may or may not be a factor.
I'll go into detail, but basically the engine cranks but won't start. However, it's not whir, whir, whir, whir, whir. It's whir, clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk (can't hear as well on the vid as in person).
I've been chasing a power draw which is a long story. Last thing I did was change the ignition switch and she ran just fine. 3 days of trouble shooting burned me out, so I put it on hold to tackle some other projects. Started her up to move from the garage to the driveway with a little run around the block, ran like a champ. Decided to change the valve cover gasket, pretty straightforward (happy to see how clean the valve train is). Got that done and she wouldn't start. So, I double checked that I didn't accidentally pull a connector apart. Opened up the cable cover for the injector wires (only wiring required to move to get the cover off) all looks fine. Checked all the fuses inside and out. I have spark and fuel pressure. The only other thing I did was to pop off the shifter handle to replace the gear select panel. I can't imagine that would have anything to do with it. Obviously, my next steps are the crank sensor and cam sensor. I guess my concern comes with the clunk sound when it's turning over. Anyone experience this, or am I concerned over nothing? Also, I'de welcome advise if I should be looking at other items.

Searching through an older post of yours it looks like you have an '01. If that's the case I'll not make suggestions. My experience is all with the RENIX era XJs.

Ground wire? Either from the battery to the back passenger's side of the engine or the braided cable from the intake to the firewall, Perhaps you bumped it loose or broke it while in there...
UPDATE:
Almost to the point of taking her into my mechanic. Went down and had a chat with him. He suggested putting the old parts back in the the order that I replaced them. I put the old ignition switch back in and she fired right up. So, the new part (replaced to chase the power draw) lasted for all of 3 starts. If anyone wants to know, the part is Standard Motor Products US294.
