If my CPS went bad would it go bad all at once?

Every thread I have seen online says the CPS will cause stall and bad running motors before it finally goes out.

My Jeep was running fine and then the next day it would not start, can the CPS just go out with out any warning?

How do I see if my CPS is bad. I do not have money to just replace parts with out knowing if they are bad or not.

I have taken the connector apart twice to clean it but still no results.

Be sure your check your camshaft sensor too. I stopped at store coupe weeks back everything was fine, cane back out not 5 mins later truck would not start. Bought new cps still no luck ended up being camshaft sensor

Yep, my apologies, it is a 96. Would a broken cam sensor make the Automatic Shut Down activate or keep my fuel pump from pumping.

In the morning I am getting under my ride and getting stuff done. I will let you know what it is soon.

Thanks for the replies.

Did you check your fuses? I thought my CPS went bad once and checked my fuses first. I forgot which ASD went bad but the culprit was my downstream 02 sensor. I had my cat replaced from a recall and afterwards the wiring harness was slightly resting against the drive shaft causing it to short out.

Bob, I just solved that very problem on my 98 Cherokee. Drove fine one day, wouldn't start the next day. It would crank, just not start. You have the 96. Simply pull the cap off your distributor and see if you have a camshaft sensor. I see the previous posts suggest you don't, however I am reading that some models do in fact have 'em. I replaced mine and it fired up. $50. Not sure how to test with a MM to be sure, but if you aren't getting spark its likely either this or the CPS. And with the CPS, its true that usually engine rides off, stalling for a week or so before going bad completely. Good luck!

Inside the distributor, there is not necessarily a cam sensor...........It's a "Hall Effect" pickup for the ignition system.................

I have read that if this pickup goes bad, the computer will think that the engine has stopped running, and trigger the ASD relay............So this could be an issue..............
I have also read that these can fail and NOT trigger a DTC, so this could be part of the issue that I have been having at random, at high altitude, with no DTC ever triggered?
