Default Cowl Seal?

How important is the cowl seal that is glued on between the cowl and hood? Mine is trashed. I've searched without any luck. I rarely find good weatherstripping at the junkyards around here, and I would rather not go to the dealer if it is unnecessary.

I'd think it is mostly for engine noise reduction along with maybe some water run-off protection. The bright side is.....without it, engine compartment heat should "vent" really well.

That makes sense. I'm just hoping it's not going to flood anything or cause water to hit any electrical bits...
