I just finished the lifted hood mod....I thing it looks great. Cheap too. Anyways, I was looking around at my XJ and had a thought, just want to get your guys opinion on it....

So my A/C doesn't work, and I'm going to go door less Memorial day weekend, eventually I'm going to make the A/C compressor on-board air. But my thought was can I take out the condenser, (the skinner radiator in the front) and wire the small electric fan to a toggle switch on my dash, for better cooling? I'm not going to need it, since I plan to do away with A/C completely, right?

Thanks,
J

You can run your aux. electric fan to a toggle switch. Many guys have done this. The aux. fan is turned on with the A/C but, there is a temp sensor on the motor that turns the aux. fan on when the temp reaches a certain temp. for extra engine cooling, as well. So, by wiring your aux. fan to a toggle switch, you would basically be setting it up to be turned on manually when it is already set up to be turned on automatically.

What sensor is the fan hooked up to? I'm not sure mine is working then, I thought it would only come on when the A/C was on, but after trying this is hasn't come on in a long time....

I know mine comes on when the temp reaches about 200 (normally runs at about 180-190) but the other day I got stuck in traffic for 20 mins, watched the temp start to climb. When it hit 200 (right as I was starting to get worried), I heard the click and whirrrrr of the electric fan. Quickly brought temp back to 180 or so and turned off. This happened several times (did I mention I was stuck in traffic?).

This was the second day I drove my XJ to work and back, so I was keeping a keen eye on all guages.

OK, that sounds good, maybe I've never gotten mine that hot.....I got to do a coolant flush soon anyways. So what about the condenser? Do I need it? could a get rid of it for better air flow through the radiator?

Thanks,
J

My aux fan does NOT work.. ive tested it and i need a new one but one word of advice is that mine gets hott when im in drive throughs and being stuck in traffic but i've never over heated, I sat for about 30 mins in stopped traffic and just turned on my heater and it didnt over heat.

the fan is hooked up to the sensor on the water jacket to the block
test: on my year 91 if the xj is running unplug that wire and the fan should run and you'll get a check engine light.
