Default coolent over flow.

So I was wheeling the other day, just cruzing around in some corn fields. Well when I shut my 98 xj off the over flow tank started over flowing like crazy. So I just let it do its thing. The motor was no where near over heating. And after wards my overflow tank is completely empty. So maybe I had too much coolent or is this normal.

I would say you probably had a little too much coolant in it. When you shut the engine off, the water pump is no longer circulating the 220 degree water thought your radiator that is keeping it at that temperature.... therefore, the water heats up even more and of course, expands and be to go somewhere... as long as the level in your overflow is at the "cold" line when your motor has sat for awhile, your okay.

Start by replacing the rad cap. The overflow bottle must always have some coolant in it.....if it's empty, u may be sucking air into the rad. When the motor is cold, remove the rad cap and check the coolant level in the rad.

Yes. Mine did that too. Likely the cap.
You also may want to idle for a bit before turning it off, allowing the coolant to circulate evenly.
