Default coolant warning light stays on?

hi can any one help?
put a new waterpump onto my 97 2.5 turbo diesel cherokee. drove it for about 10 minutes then the low coolant warning light came on but the temp stayed normal. got more coolant and toped up but it didn't take much. then i gave the hoses a few squeezes and got a few bubbles out. then did a good bit of driving, the light stayed on but the temp didn't rise. got home went to top up again but it was full.
oh yea funny thing is the low coolant warnig light didn't come on when the pump died and i lost my coolant?? light still on??????????
