i beg you, divulge your source, i purchased an omix-ada, they said made in the USA, inside the big box, was a smaller vista-blow heater core, made in mexico, i paid $127.00 on amazon, and sent it right back, went to where i bought the 1st one and returned it for another pos

Thanks for the input guys. I've been pretty patient already with this thing having to tear down the engine to do the freeze plugs two or three times, and a new radiator (easy Ive come to learn).

No steam on the windows even on full defrost.

Tonight I discovered that my XJ is in fact a victim of the wet passenger floorboard. When driving in the rain I can hear a slight trickling sound and water drops came shooting out above my rearview mirror earlier. Its not my DD, definitely a project..the more I drive it the more quirks and things-to-fix I find about it! Windshield reseal and rhino-line interiors is my plan... But anyways back on topic--I'd be interested to know what a reputable brand of heater core is. I need that $1000 towards my 35's :-)

on the engine side of your firewall, below the heater box and where your a/c and heater hoses go in. there is a small rubber hose sticking out that points down, 90 defree elbow lookin. check that for antifreeze. wipe the end of it and see. its a drain hose for the heater box..
also when I bought my jeep I had the same issue, smelled antifreeze at start up. it got worse quickly.. found someone to replace mine for me 300.00 including parts.. he was in and out of the jeep in a couple of hours. does them all the time so he knew where to go for every fastener. it was scary watchin the dash come out in under a half hour.. most of it. down to the heater box anyway.

I thought that was a drain hose for the A/C ? Either way, it's dry. It bugs me that I can smell it but can't see where any of it is leaking.

That's lucky that you got that all done for that price. Any chance your guy can come to York PA and do mine?? lol

This is what I did with a weeping heater core.
It might not be what some people would do but it's been good all winter now and no fogging of the screen and front door windows.

For me a strip down of the dash was not an option, I like working on the Jeep but that type of job for me is not fun so I put some of this stuff in and it was fixed in 10mins.
Incidently, I had flushed my heater core as it was not giving out any heat, after though it was blasting out lovely hot air and now it's dry hot air!!

Thanks for the suggestion but I think crap like that is the whole reason my core may be leaking in the first place. Blah, guess I'll have to replace it sometime. Might put it off till next year.

A number of times, in a number of vehicles I've had the Alumaseal powder work on tiny heater core leaks. (just steam). Not! The similar looking little tube of Bar's Leak, (gummy stuff). The aluminum powder, Alumiseal. 1/2 a little tube and wait a week, maybe add the other 1/2. I don't see a little powder in solution hurting anything. Just run it good'n long after you add it.

Once I saw it sparkling in my coolant 2 years later! (still "on duty" )

think twice about putting it off for too long. That heater core could go if it gets too bad and strand ya somewhere.. mine was pretty narly looking when it was pulled out. would not have thought it was that bad from what was gettin all over my windshield. it did not have long to live... wish I had a photo of it to show ya...

Damn this heater core! A shame it's so difficult to get to. I still am unable to locate any leaking antifreeze and have been watching my reservoir level like a hawk, and it hasn't budged noticeably. But dang, if I leave the vent switch on when I start it up, it reeks. No steam on the windshield though still.

It'd be great if I could somehow rig a pump up to JUST the heater core/hoses, and run some kind of leak stopper through it and let it settle in there first, in efforts to prevent it from flowing through the whole system.

If I could just keep it isolated to the core from the rest of the cooling system, I would totally do it. But, physics don't allow for that! I've already had to replace hoses, freeze plugs, radiator, and thermostat because of stop-leak the previous owner put in. If I'm gonna fix this, gotta do it right.
