coolant leak when I turn on
97 4.0 I started it up for work yesterday came out and saw a green puddle and I looked where it was from and under the water pump. And it was not a slow leak it was leaking. I had no choise but to drive to work. 20 miles away. Got to work with no problems but when I arrived I checked and was leaking but not as much as before. My hood latch just went again. So I didnt have tools ready to open hood to check coolant. Bascially is water pump hard to replace? Or just pay mechanic to do it?

Replying to another thread reminded me of this...
When I first got my Jeep the radiator cap was leaking right onto to the lower hose which would drip off the bottom of the pump making it look like the culpret.
Pumps do have a weep hole to indicate when they have gone bad and emit a small amount of coolant. Hoever, I have seen some left to go on for so long they were leaking like a sailor on shore leave at 5am.

Thats what I did. New water pump, high flow stat, new hoses, all aluminum radiator. Now all I have to do is get rid of that cappy mechanical fan.

bingo! other than the fan part. After several Camaros and Firebirds with just electric fans that rarely ever worked correctly, I prefer a mechanical anyday. Hell, I manually control my Jeeps electric secondary. Once the thing stayed 210-215 for too long, boom, straight to 240. Not very comforting.
