Default Converting vertical to horizontal oil filter adapter

1992 XJ LAREDO
Hello everyone, I am seeing a leak coming from the oil filter adapter and so I will be changing the O rings within it. However since I have to take the adapter off, I was hoping I could get some help on what steps to take to scrap the messy vertical adapter and slap on a horizontal adapter in it's place. I am wondering how to do the replacement,
*I have read many posts on how to take it off, I just need to know what to do to convert it to the later style.

The later style will bolt right up. The block has a tube coming out of it that only lines up with the groove in the oil filter adapter in one direction, the horizontal adapter has the groove in the right place. I just swapped an engine from a 98 into my 92 and looked it over before deciding what adapter to use. I ended up sticking with my 92 adapter because it looked like the oil filter wouldn't clear the evap canister. Now that the engine is in it looks like the horizontal adapter might fit, I haven't measured yet but I might look into swapping the newer 98 adapter.

Perfect! So the bolt attaching the newer style adapter to the block has the same threads as the old style?

Yes. either adapter will bolt onto the block, the only issue might be clearing the evap canister, at least on my '92 that looks to be the only issue. I had the horizontal adapter on my engine but swapped it just before putting the engine in.
