Nothing in my post TO THE OP should have given you the impression that I don't know the first thing about motor/gear oil. I've been working on my cars and trucks for 50 years. I don't claim to be an expert but I have learned a few things along the way, so in my opinion the Mobil 1 site is one of many places to go to get some answers regarding the difference between conventional vs. synthetic oil. The video I referred to is obviously an extreme example. You would have realized that had your arrogance not got in the way.
I use cheapest oil from Advance auto.
I was repairing engines for 17 years.
99% of engines are "killed" by their owners.

Huh? Calm down man, I was agreeing with you! The Mobil1 site is a good resource as you said. I meant that there are benefits across the entire temperature range, not just at extreme temperatures. That's all. I apologize if you took the comment to read a web page directed at you as some sort of a personal attack and not a general suggestion.

Just bought a 2000 Cherokee Limited with 103,000 on the truck and 15K on the reman Jasper engine. The guy I bought it from said he used 5w-30 synthetic.... when I asked him he said it was a myth that you could not change back to conventional. Sooo... right, wrong and if ok, is there a process to move this over?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply... it would be cheaper and I've never used a synthetic oil. As for process I read about folks having to mix and blend when going from conventional to syn so I didn't know if the same was true for the reverse.
A lot of these untruths were actually started and perpetuated by the dino oil companies, remember they spent about 20 years trying to discredit synthetic oils instead of marketing one of their own, lol. The <cue ominous voice> Long-And-Expensive-Switchover© along with the "you can never switch back" that occasionally surfaces are just remnants that anti-marketing effort.
They are basically interchangeable. You can mix synth with dino if you want to, nothing evil will happen. (other than giving up some properties of the synthetic)
