I took off the front dash cover the other day to see what kind of hack job the previous owner did the the radio wiring (its really bad) I have not put the dash cover part back on yet and was thinking about swapping out the instrument panel to one with actual gauges and not dummy lights.

Is that a very involved project? Or is it a direct swap from a different jeep? I would rather not mess with the odometer part though.

I know on most xj's the the wiring is already there to use the other cluster so you should be able to swap in the other cluster and good to go.

I would pick up one from the junk yard to test it out.

First thing is an idiot light use a switch,guages use analog that sence throught a range,your switches are eithere open or closed. You would need to switch those that you want to be analog,then make sure the wiring you have to the cluster will support guages,it is all possible just a few changes.

Yeah I saw a couple different wire clusters just hanging out behind the plastic dash panel, I am guessing those are the alternate hook ups?

so having a 93 cherokee with idiot lights and big gas gauge, could i swap my cluster with a 97-01 cluster, or do i have to keep it within a 96 cluster because of the digital mileage? i dont mind the older version cluster but i just want to know in case i can only find a newer cluster. thanks

Just a thought, would it be easier and more economical to just add a separate temp gauge?

even if i kept the old cluster and took pics of both before i put the new one in, could i run into legal issues later on? because i really want a tachometer and that gas gauge is just ridiculous ha

If you are just wanting temp and oil,I would just buy an aftermarket set and use them,you get all 3 and have volts to.

I have changed the cluster in mine and I did not write down or take pictures,I have no plans on selling it and the motor and trans are not the same. If I did sell it I would just inform the new buyer of this,as long as you disclose it you are fine. But taking pictures would be a good back-up.

There are shops that will change the odometer for you but just write down the mileage and disclose it to the new owner if you ever sell it and you will be fine. My dad sold is truck that the odometer did not work and he just checked the mileage box on the title that said over 100k

I will probably do this instead and find a spot to mount the gauges.

so i plan on doing this real soon but, i want to make sure i can find the right new senders. i found the oil pressure pressure switch easy on autozone, but when i type in temp. sender i get temp. switch. is that the same thing? and there isnt an option for a switch or light type like there is with the oil pressure switch and need to know if this is the right one. i put the link in. thanks.

I just did the swap on my '93 2.5L and it was almost too easy... it was a total bolt-up with the cluster and I all I had to change were two switches to sensors:

Duralast TU236 replaces the temp gauge switch and a Duralast PS233 replaces the oil pressure switch. Both from Autozone.

The same part #'s work on both 2.5L and 4.0L engines.

thanks. those part #'s helped out a lot. and apparently they were out of stock of the 93 switches so i just bought ones for a 94. same thing. i plan on buying the new gauge cluster tonight. very excited! still dont see how the tach. will work seeing as to how i never had it before but i guess we'll find out.
