Default Cold Starting Problem

Noob here,

1st I did search and have found info close to what I am about to ask. But no Cigar.

We have had some king hell cold temps. My 93 XJ ran fine last week after I charged the battery and had some issues with starting in the cold.

Now we have had another cold snap and when I go to start it it will turn but not start and when I get out I think I smell gas. Not my own of course.

When I popped the hood to hook up a battery charger for a quick start, the voltage was a bit low after a few cranks. I noticed I must have knocked the tube off of the overflow bottle and there was no antifreeze in it.

So to you wise jeep sages I ask you:

1. Is it too cold to start the green hornet?
2. New Distro cap?/Clean Distro Cap
3. New Battery?
4. Did I fry the radiator?
5. Did I fry something else (ECU)
6. Is the gas smell anti-freeze, and the engine is frozen

This is my winter car and the only way I can really get to Denver. I am going to make sure everything is full get a new battery and see what happens. It usually starts fine. Runs fine and I maintain it fluids, tune ups, etc.

Kind of stumped. And thanks in advance.

ok, first off remember kiss, K eep I t Simple Stupid

3 things to make it start

1. electric
we know there is voltage to the starter, cause its turning over
Did you check for spark?
2. Mechanical
We know that there is no problem here, cause its turning over
3. Fuel
I know this is getto, but after you have checked for spark and confirmed
That there is spark spray some starter fluid in the intake (after taking out the airfilter of course) if it starts then dies you got a fuel issue

remember gas has a 28 day shelf life, (ethanol or non ethanol) If you didnt use fuel stabilizer then it can go from bad gas, to a glue like substance and gum up your lines and if it sat even longer than 3 months theres a chance that the gas has cristalized

hint (gas goes bad faster in the heat than in the cold) but no one runs their said vehicles in the cold, but they run it in the heat, hence forth the confusion.

The reasons I know this is from working on motorcycles, 4 wheelers, tractors and other veichles that people just let sit over long periods of time and you can see the effects of bad gas over those times that you cant see in cars cause we use them so much.

Is it turning over at normal speed, or is it doing it slowly, like it's struggleing to start? If it is, yank the Batt out, bring it to an auto parts store and have them load test it... You could have a cell going bad. That's the only thing that's cheap and easy to check out without racking your brain...

And if your engine is frozen, you have to find a way to thaw it out...
And your antifreeze isn't mixed right. (believe you me, I know this first hand...)
