There is a ton of info on cold air intakes on here if you look. Basically in a nut shell the only real "cold air intake" would be a snorkel. You can get ones that block a good bit of the heat from the engine bay. But I looked into it and decided not to waste my money. I will make something or fab up a snorkel like alot of the people on here did.

My suggestion/thoughts.......spend your $250 on replacing the entire cooling system, if u haven't already.

I know exactly what the newbie OP is asking (the subject) and was just suggesting that, if he hasn't already, to spend money/time on the (probably new to him and neglected by the PO) cooling system in his XJ vs a chrome/metal (but pretty) hot air intake. If it intakes air from under the hood, it's not much of a CAI. Just my $0.02 from the resident butt.

wrong snorkel isnt the only "real" cold air intake just make a box out of sheet metal towards the left headlight and then put weather stripping along the top of the box so it will seal to the hood i will post a drawing

edit: picture sorry for poor quality just drew it up

Well I agree with djb383. He says his opinion....like mine...is that any intake in the engine bay/under the hood isnt a cold air intake. On an XJ. I have owned many cars. And all had a cold air intake if possible. But the filter itself was always put in the bumper or fender which was located out side the engine bay. Which was sucking in cold air...instead of the warm or hot engine air. But this my opinion. Yours is a nice or would be a nice intake setup. If done correctly but not a true cold air intake.

The AEM intake on my 2000 XJ, combined with a Flowmaster 40 cat-back system has helped the breathing capabilities, power, and mileage a little. My teenage son was getting 18 mpg in city driving, and I'm getting over 20 mpg on mostly highway miles. It sounds sweet, too. We also run synthetic oil, synthetic lube, Michelin 235/70 tires, etc., just FYI.

So, lots of variables possibly effecting mpg other than a cai.
