cold air intake

this is pointless tho... a cone filter has the same area as our stock filters. you could just cut a bigger hole in the box and wrap a heat protective foil around the intake hose but its still only an intake. not a cold air intake.

I've been thinking about it more since I posted that and, although I don't have surface area numbers in front of me, I think you're probably right. It would have to be a very large cone filter to actually increase the surface area and to take full advantage of that I'd have to be close to WOT, which I never am; so I'll probably hack my box a little and stick with a drop in. I might continue to think about a smooth intake pipe though. For me it isn't so much about seeking "cold air", but smooth air flow.

On a related note, does anyone know of a drop in filter that is better than stock aside from K&N? I'd rather have something I don't have to oil.
