Default Codes

I'm wondering if there was a way to get codes from my 90 Cherokee without a dtc scanner? I do not have one so this is my next best route. It's just that my emissions maintenance light has been on since I bought the Jeep. Any help please?

You can try this

or just take it to auto zone and they will scan it for free. I have a Bluetooth obd scanner I use with the Torque Android app. Cost about 10 bucks and comes in handy.

I'm a bit rusty with Renix Jeeps (87-90), but below is a link to some information. You don't need any special equipment. Your emission maintenance light illuminates every 82.5K miles and it is simply a "reminder" to replace oxygen sensor, etc.

This is NOT a trouble code issue. I think I simply unplugged my box under the dash on my Comanche (same guts as yours). Can't reset if I remember right, just replace the unit or unplug the connector leading to it.

You can also Google search on the following and you'll find lots of threads on this. Renix Jeeps + emission maintenance light

Good luck and enjoy your XJ!

As stated above it's a reminder to replace things or some such, easiest thing to do is yank the bulb out.
I know for a fact the all Renix jeeps suffer from severe Alzheimer's, they have no memory what so ever, each time you start them up it's like the first time they've started.
Ive got lots of fantastic sites for you to check out below:

Awesome guys, thanks. I've gone through all the steps that have to do with some of my issues. I believe my problem with starting has to do with my injectors dripping under pressure while it is shut off. I'll find out once I do the injector upgrade to 746's.

I un plugged the box under dash 10 years ago with no problems.

I've read lots of theories on the Renix computer and codes, most are misleading. No codes produced or stored ...This guy has made an excellent video on using the old snap on reader. I can confirm he has it right, I have the same scanner.

That is pretty helpful. The only thing is that I live in a rural area where there the shops out here will have a hard time figuring this reader out. Luckily I have used one. I wonder if they will read it for me. Thanks for the helpful tips guys. I just might unplug my light underneath.
