Code p1391

Code p1391
I have a stock 1999 xj 4.0 4wd. I’ve swapped my crank positioning sensor, distributor, spark plugs/wires. I got a new battery and starter as well to try and help out with the rough idle and starting. I’ve been replacing vacuum hoses as I see them broken/cracked. Every time I take my jeep to get smogged (California emissions) I get told my computer isnt ready to be smogged. Whenever I have a shop do a diagnostic im always told this code and my camshaft position sensor is bad, I don’t have one on my jeep. Would my computer throwing phantom codes indicate I have to replace it? I’m pretty lost at this point with the xj.ive cleaned electrical connections as I’ve gone through this.

Its probably the gear on your new distibutor. they can be put on 180 degrees out by the manufacturer. doesnt seem like much but it will cause this code. you need to pull it out, remove the roll pin and spin the gear on the shaft.

yes I did. The jeep was sitting for about 2 years before I bought it. I’ve had a couple different codes (crankshaft sensor, new injectors, emissions parts, and etc) the code has always remained without the others though. I did notice last night wile driving the check engine light disappears when I bring it up to speed of 40mph. I only Notice I have an issue because when I shift into reverse the jeep wants to die automatically. (It’s a 1 foot 2 pedal moment). Also if I leave the jeep idling in park it’ll “stutter” and gradually get worse stuttering.

Could also be wiring to CPS/CKS, or a broken solder joint in PCM. Got a multimeter? Check signal at the PCM.
Or CPS/CKS need to be synced.
Consider entry level 0-scope ($60).

100% it could be. I put one in, the dizzy is fine, but the aftermarket switch plate ( cam sensor) failed in 3 days. I pulled a mopar from a jeep with 180 in it at the yard and runs great since

SO, lets hope you retained the old distributor, as you can compare the gears, and the alignment must be identical, or it will be out of sync and throw the code
check the wiring very close, same thing for the cam sensor, used OEM is good as new aftermarket, unless it known failed
tell me you did not throw them away
