As i was reading up on the code(s), one of the suggestions was to check some of the fuses. This fuse was in the relays and fuses that were underhood. The fuses weren't clearly marked either on the fuse box its self or in the owners manual. I was lead to believe that it was related to my oxygen sensor heater circuit, and i did get rid of the O2 sensor heater circuit codes that I had present.
So what relay or fuse did you replace? I’ve got the same issue on 97 I just bought
I literally join this site to share this after reading multiple threads like this. I had the p0171 show up on a 97. In the end it was the harness leading up to the upper O2 sensor where there's strap holding the loom to the side of the block above the oil pan. My theory is the oil leaking from the power steering got into the loom and degraded to coating on the wires till heat and vibrations at that strap point allow wires to make contact and confuse the sensor and throw the code. I really hope this helps someone from firing off the parts cannon unnecessarily.
