Code 44 please help
This is for girlfriends 96 XJ Sport.
Recently replaced alternator (reman Duralast w/lifetime warranty) and serpentine belt (Gates). No CEL during test start. We drove around with no issues for 5 minutes until I see the dreaded CEL...Went back with Maglight and checked all sensors and terminals on alternator. All seems well and in its place.
From what I've researched a code 44 is as follows:
44 No FJ2 voltage present at logic board
OR
44 Logic module self-diagnostics indicate problem
OR
44 Battery temperature out of range
Read on through forum search that the alternator might be charging at too low a level, which could cause the code.
If anyone has any ideas or solutions, please let me know. Bummed to come across new problem after taking half day to help GF out.
Thanks, guys.

it drops a little then, apx 14 v.
that would be normal charge.

You are indicating a code 44, which I assume you retrieved by the "key on - key off" technique.
You have a 1996 and while the 2 digit code can be helpful, it's better to retrieve the FULL P0XXX code which can be retrieved by hooking up a simple code reader or a scan tool to the OBD2 port underneath the dash on the drivers side. Any 1996 will give you access to that code via that port; it was mandated by law starting in 1996.
The full P0XXX code is much more helpful and detailed in isolating the problem. I just don't mess around with the 2 digit codes any longer with 1996 and newer XJs as those codes are vague and can lead to the chasing of your tail. Troubleshooting is tough enough and you want the best and most accurate code data to help you isolate root cause and lead you to an easy repair. Use the technology provided to you by your XJ.
Retrieve the full code and let us know what that code is. If you don't have access to a code reader or a scan tool, some parts stores like AutoZone will read the code for you for free.

MIL 44 now P1493 (Battery Temp Sensor input voltage too low), or P1492 (Battery Temp Sensor input voltage too high).
Sounds like you have an issue with the Battery Temperature Sensor (under the battery).
