So first off, I'm wondering if my Cobra 75WXST is messed up. I turned it on before I had it hooked up to the antenna (didn't key it up though) and no matter how low I turned the squelch, I got no static. I had static when I went to the weather portion - but not on CB - so I was thinking this was just because I didn't have an antenna hooked up.

Now, after I've hooked up the antenna, same deal. No static no matter how low I have the squelch and I can faintly pick up one weather station - and disconnecting the antenna doesn't seem to have an effect on how well I receive that transmission. So... is there a problem with my antenna or my radio or what?

Secondly ... do not by the MotionOffroad CB antenna mount. See my review here:

And before anyone points it out, I did paint the mount, but I took a dremel and ground away the paint around all of the points that connect to the body and where the antenna attaches.

It sounds like your receive needs to be turned up. Find a C.B. shop and tell them you need your "ears" turned up. I have a Connex 4400hp That puts out 285 watts on low and 405 watts on high. Also try refreshing the ground on tyour antenna mount. Grab the antenna while you hold the mic in your other hand. If you hear static with the squelch turned allthe way down, its a bad ground,,,if not radio needs to be adjusted.
