Evidently my slave cylinder has quit working. I have bled it several times with a vacumm bleeder, no better.
Question is, wishful thinking, can I install an external slave without removing the internal one?

No fluid leaking. I can not get a pedal, it is no pedal pressure.
It was working the last time I drove it, it has been sitting in the garage while I changed the water pump and t'sat.

Slave cylinder WILL leak if bad.
Clutch master CAN leak if bad. clutch master can bypass internally and not necessarily leak.
Try this.
Pump the clutch pedal about 50 times and walk away for 20 minutes. See if you get some pedal then.

Let's not bypass the simple stuff. Are you sure the pedal is connected to the master? Is the master pumping fluid when you press the pedal (crack the line open).
Like Cruiser54 says, the master can leak past the seal and not leak externally (check valve to the reservoir). I had this on my Nissan P/U.

Ok Cruiser, I was wrong about that.
When I checked I still had a soft pedal, I checked again and I still have soft pedal, but now the clutch engages.

It's gotta be going somewhere.
How does that hose look that goes from the master to slave?

It looks good.
It is setting in my garage with cardboard underneath, no sign of leaking.
I would guess 8,000 miles ago I put in rebuilt trans, transfer case, clutch, slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder.
The other day it would not engage.
Then today after doing what you
told me, it is engaging.
I do wish that I had a little more pedal.
