The Morris 4X4 center has a good knowledge data base that may help you. http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowled...ex.htm#service

With the service manual to give you directions. You will want a transmission jack and a good set of extensions as the bolts at the top of the bell housing can be a pain. You do want to have a torque wrench to put things back together and have it stay together.

I have not done a clutch on a Jeep only AMC Eagle. So I do not remember if the transmission has an integral bell housing or not. Getting the bell housing in without the transmission is easier when they are separable. I would separate transfer case from the transmission to make removal and installation easier.

You may want to get some extra bolts that are the same size as the transmission and the bell housing, but much longer. Cut the heads off and slot so you can turn them with a screw driver. This way you can get things in place without having to fight getting things in place and installing the bolts.

You will also want to get a clutch alignment tool.

Have on hand PB blaster to get things apart and and anti seize so it is easier the next time.

Since you are asking I am assuming you have not done this job before. Get a friend to help and take your time. There is a lot to do to do this job.

first of all, if your clutch still feels good, don't replace it just because it smelled burnt. you were probably just riding the clutch too much and heated it up. if it's not slipping, or the release bearing isn't squealing, there's no real need to tear it apart.

but if you do, what brand of clutch are you replacing it with? two best choices are centerforce and luk. sachs is good too.

i've done both my tj's and used centerforce clutches. for my 99, i used a centerforce II, and my 97 i used a centerforce I.

i replaced the throw out bearings and the pilot bearings also. they did not come in a kit from centerforce.
i rented (loaned) the tool from partsource, your equivalence to autozone to pull the pilot. don't even try the hydraulic grease trick, it's messy and didn't work for me.

also, keep in mind, if you do choose centerforce, don't resurface the flywheel.
and no need to flush the slave, unless there is a problem with it.

get yourself, or borrow a transmission jack. it's the only way you're gonna get it lined back up to slide back on the output shaft. trust me, i used one on both jeeps, and it was still hard as hell to get it lined up. and i do have the proper splined line up tool.

get yourself a chilton manual, it will come in handy just to know how to remove the shifter...

Clutches are actually pretty simple. Most of it is common sense. They are more intimidating than anything.

Cannot stress enough about the transmission jack. If you get it right, you won't have to take out the transfer case

DON'T get haynes!!! they show you a blown up picture then pretty much throw you to the wolves

When removing the tranny, you may want to gently pry on it to get the input shaft to break free.

The shift linkage i believe is 4 8mm bolts
14mm for t case linkage

If i remember right, there are 2 external torx bolts holding the crank position sensor

can't really think of anything else of the top of my head.
PM me if you need further help
